A fatal two-vehicle accident in the Berkeley City of California claimed the lives of two road users on Monday, March 9, along Route 9, South of Sylan Lakes Boulevard in Ocean County.
The accident, which happened before 1:48 pm on the said date, threw the town settlement into a frenzy. It involved a ghastly collision between a car and a bicycle that resulted in the death of the driver and the rider.
The Berkeley Township Police, alongside the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, has delved into investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
Earlier investigations carried out by the OCPO Vehicular Homicide Unit on the scene of the fatal wreck revealed that prior to the collision, the involved car was travelling south on Route 9.
At the same time, the cyclist was riding on the other side of the centerline, keeping to the shoulder of the northbound road. For an unknown reason, the southbound vehicle crossed the dividing traffic line and collided with the bicycle and its rider.
The impact knocked down the bicycle, throwing off the cyclist in the process. Both road users died on the scene, as confirmed by local paramedics.
The deceased have since been identified by authorities. While the car driver was identified as Jeffery Martins, a 41-year-old Bayville resident, the cyclist’s identity was confirmed as Frank Brooks of Beachwood.
Following the accident, the Berkeley South Route 9 Motor Road in Pine Beach was shut down for hours to enhance the necessary on-scene investigations.
