The man who died in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident in Claremont, California, has been identified by the authorities. The authorities released his name on Monday, March 2nd, as Bill Demastus, 95.
Demastus, on the morning of Saturday, February 22nd, got hit by a car while walking on Indian Hill Boulevard, near the railroad tracks at about 10 a.m. According to the authorities, the deceased was walking to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf when he got hit.
The car that struck the older man is a Honda Civic that was heading north at the time. Demastus sustained severe injuries, and paramedics took him to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he passed away on Tuesday, February 25th.
The driver of the Hinda, whose name the authorities withheld remained at the scene and cooperated with the police. The police did not believe drugs or alcohol played a role, and have not provided any additional information at the time of this report.
Vehicle-versus-pedestrian accidents are not uncommon in California. Often, drivers and pedestrians play a role in how the crashes occur and share the liability in such circumstances.
For pedestrians, it is imperative to look at the roads carefully before crossing. Look left and right diligently, gauge the average speed of the drivers, and cross where there is a crosswalk.
While walking, pedestrians should stay on the sidewalk and away from the edge. For drivers, never run a red light at an intersection, give pedestrians the right of way, and always drive within the speed limit where there’s a crosswalk.
