A bicyclist and a motorist sustained non-critical injuries in a collision that took place on the U.S. Highway 101. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 23 just before noon and was reported to the authorities at around 11:00 a.m. as per the accident reports.
According to the details shared by the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened close to the Dr. Fine Bridge in Smith River. It involved a passenger vehicle and a bicycle. The driver of the passenger vehicle was identified as Jami Pfau. The bicyclist was identified as Tanner Smith.
Pfau was driving a 2019 Ford Fusion southbound on the U.S. Highway 101 at the time of the collision. Tanner Smith was riding his bicycle on the south shoulder of the southbound lanes. As the Ford Fusion drew close to the bicycle, Pfau left the roadway for some reason and veered onto the shoulder of the road. Her vehicle collided with Smith’s bicycle before continuing towards the embankment. It then overturned and came to rest on the roadway.
Tanner Smith sustained non-serious injuries as a result of the collision. Pfau also incurred minor injuries. Once the first responders and law enforcement personnel arrived on the scene of the collision, both were transported to the Sutter Coast Hospital. California Highway Patrol, Del Norte Ambulance, Crescent City Fire Protection District and a number of local agencies responded to the incident.
The accident is currently being investigated by the Crescent City CHP Office. Subsequent accident reports may reveal why and how Pfau lost control of her vehicle which led to the collision.
