An eight-year-old and a 13-year-old were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Thursday, according to California accident reports.
The accident on Interstate 580 forced the closure of several westbound lanes for an extended period.
Authorities from the Alameda County Coroner’s Office said the victims were Candace Parks, 8, and Elijah Naidu, 13. The two were residents of Oakland.
Their relationship was not released by the authorities. However, a KIPP Bridge Academy official said they were siblings and their mother was driving the white Honda Accord.
The California Highway Patrol said the driver was a 42-year-old woman and she suffered injuries along with a ten-year-old boy who was also in the car. The school official said that boy was another sibling.
Their names were not made public. However, the authorities said the woman received major injuries while the boy’s injuries were moderate.
The CHP revealed that the fatalities and injuries resulted from a three-car crash that occurred after 11:30 a.m. on westbound I-580 to the east of the 13th Avenue overpass.
According to the CHP, the woman lost control of the Honda for unknown reasons and hit the rear of a Ford F-250 that was parked in the center divide.
The Honda was subsequently hit by a Toyota Sienna minivan.
Accident reports indicate that only the occupants of the Honda suffered injuries.
CHP Officer Sean Layton said initial evidence did not suggest that drugs or alcohol factored into the crash.
Oakland police officers said several passersby stopped to try to remove the children from the vehicle. Officers were able to remove one child immediately, but they were only able to stabilize the other until firefighters arrived.
