Catalina Helicopter Crash Leaves 3 Dead


Over the long weekend, a tour helicopter crashed while on its way to Catalina Island from Long Beach airport. Santa Catalina Island, is a popular tourist and weekend destination.

The chopper, a Eurocopter AS 350, was carrying six total, including the pilot. Three passengers died, while three others a suffered serious injuries and are in critical condition. The Federal Aviation Administration has not yet determined the cause of the accident, however, the engine has been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.

The charter company, Island Express notes in their website that they have been giving tours of Catalina Island for 25 years. Piolet Emeric Maillet was killed in the helicopter crash, which occurred on the west side of the island and caused a small fire.
