Cecilia Delgadillo and 12-year-old Girl Killed in Modesto Crash that Injured Several Others

A woman and a 12-year-old girl died in a traffic accident in Modesto, California, on Monday, September 7th. The California Highway Patrol in the car accident report failed to identify the minor, but they disclosed the adult victim’s name as Cecilia M. Delgadillo, 29, of Oakland.

The CHP said that the crash occurred on Highway 132 at about 4:02 p.m. between River and McCracken roads, about 14 miles west of downtown Modesto. The preliminary investigation determined that Delgadillo was eastbound on the highway in a 2001 Honda Civic at an unknown speed.

At the same time, Lucas C. Chicas, 46, of Redwood City, drove a white 2000 Ford E-350 van westbound at 40 mph. The motorist parked at a red light at River Road. The investigators said that the victim let her car drift about 2 feet into the westbound lane for an unknown reason.

Witnesses said she was trying to pass traffic. The woman then turned sharply to the right and entered the south shoulder of the road, causing the Honda to spin counterclockwise. The vehicle reentered the roadway, crossed both traffic lanes, and collided with the Ford on the north shoulder.

The force of the collision killed Delgadillo, who officers said was not wearing a seatbelt. The fatal minor, who sat in the right front passenger seat, wore a seatbelt. A 2-year-old girl in the Honda suffered a broken arm, and an 8-year-old boy had a broken arm and brain bleed.

Medics conveyed the two to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment. Chicas suffered significant injuries, and the paramedics took him to San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp.

A passenger in the Ford, Irvin Z. Medina, of Redwood City, 34, complained of pains to the neck, hand, and side, and received medical attention at the crash site. Thomas Olsen, the CHP spokesman, said the incident is the fourth fatality this Labor Day Weekend.
