Coroner Identifies Michael Phillips as Victim of Tehachapi Plane Crash

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office identified the man killed in a plane crash outside the Tehachapi Municipal Airport, California. In the accident report update on Tuesday, July 28th, sheriff officials revealed the victim’s name as Michael Phillips, a 69-year-old resident of Westchester.

The crash report released on Friday, July 24th, placed the time of the incident at about 11:53 a.m. on the 400-block of Green Street. Phillips was the sole occupant of the aircraft, and the Kern County Fire Department said nobody in the surrounding buildings and businesses sustained injuries.

The victim died at the scene, and the cause and manner of death remain under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is heading the inquiry on what caused the small Cessna plane to crash, and they will release an update once they have more information.

Plane crashes are not as frequent as motor vehicle collisions or other forms of accidents, but it has more fatal consequences when they occur. Common injuries sustained when an aircraft crashes include brain injuries from windows, overhead compartment, or falling luggage and broken bones or fractures to the hands, feet, arm, legs, or ribs.

Aviation accidents can compress or damage a person’s spinal cord causing partial or total paralysis. Fire outbreaks from the friction of brakes and the combustibility of airline fuel can result in burns, and the victim might require skin graft and extensive cosmetic surgery. It can also lead to emotional trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
