Police have arrested a man on vehicular manslaughter charges after his passenger died Thursday in a car wreck while fleeing from authorities in San Bernardino.
Garyon J. Perkins, 19, of San Bernardino, faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and evading police, according to the San Bernardino Police Department. The charges stem from a crash Thursday that claimed the life of his passenger, identified Sunday in car accident reports as Daisean Washington, 18, of San Bernardino.
Police said they attempted to pull over Perkins’ vehicle sometime before 1 a.m. Thursday, but Perkins fled. The chase culminated soon after in a crash with a parked car and a tree near 16th Street and Medical Center Driver, according to car accident reports.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced Washington dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the wreck, authorities reported Sunday. Perkins, who reportedly provided police with a false name at the time of the crash, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of major injuries.
Perkins later was released from the hospital and was transported to the West Valley Detention Center, where he remains held on a $1 million bond, according to online court records. He is set to make an appearance Tuesday in San Bernardino Superior Court.
Investigators have not said whether factors like speed or intoxication might have contributed to the crash. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
