David Bourne Identified as La Jolla Shore Beach Accident Victim

Joshua Crumby

An accident report update released on Thursday, July 2nd, identified the man whose body was found last week at the foot of a sea bluff in La Jolla Shores Beach, California. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the victim’s name as David Romney Bourne, a 64-year-old La Jolla resident.

The medical examiner said a passerby found the man’s body on an outcropping of rocks under a roughly 75-foot-tall ocean-front cliff off the 1300-block of Coast Walk at about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 28th. There is currently no information on how Bourne met his death, but the ME ruled it an accident.

Beach-related accidents are seasonal as they tend to occur mostly in the summer when people are soaking up the sun. These occurrences are either the fault of individuals or a result of negligent beach maintenance or poorly trained beach staff. The incidents lead to wounds like traumatic brain injuries (TBI), cuts, and lacerations, and in extreme cases, death.

Some common beach accidents are drowning or near-drowning, surfing accidents, and jet ski accidents. Victims of any of these occurrences, who can prove that the incident was due to the beach authorities’ negligence, can bring a civil lawsuit to recover damages for the loss suffered.

Loss under this head covers medical bills, physical therapy bills, lost wages, lost earning capacity, and mental anguish. Other compensation the court would award will include emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life.
