A man from Northern California lost his life in a boating accident on Lake Tahoe. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department, on Tuesday, August 11th, identified the victim as David Castorena, a 28-year-old Napa resident.
According to the police, the incident occurred about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the lake’s south shore. The victim and two others were in a rental boat. Castorena was trying to get into an inflatable tube tied to the vessel when its propeller struck his leg.
The accident report came in at about 4 p.m. on Monday, August 10th, and the SLTPD dispatched rescue teams to the area of Lakeshore Marina. Emergency workers tried to resuscitate David Castorena, but he remained unresponsive. The police said he was not wearing a life jacket.
Emergency workers rescued a second man, who had his life jacket on, with no injuries. The third man remained on the boat and went unscathed. Lt. Shannon Laney said that the incident serves as a tragic reminder that boating safety is a top priority on the water.
The lieutenant reminded boaters to wear a life jacket, refrain from drinking, and boat responsibly. The accident remains under investigation.
Boating safety tips include checking for harmful fumes, bringing the proper life jackets for everyone on board, and checking the weather forecast beforehand. Don’t overload the boat with people and equipment, have a safety kit on board, use common sense, and follow proper anchoring and docking procedures.
