A suspected DUI crash involving a single vehicle in Hemet, California left two casualties in its wake and may require the intervention of a drunk driving attorney. The tragic occurrence played out at night on Tuesday, May 12.

The Hemet Police Department dispatched officers to the crash site shortly after 8 p.m., following reports of a vehicle that went off the roadway and drove into a tree. The accident happened on north Kirby Street, just south of Fruitvale Avenue.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fatal victim was riding as a passenger in a 2019 Acura. The vehicle was moving through the south traffic lanes on Kirby, with Ernie Alaniz, 26, of San Jacinto behind the wheels.

For reasons yet to be established, Alaniz accelerated the vehicle and lost control. As a result, the motorist drove veered sideways, towards the west side of the street, where it collided with a tree located just off the roadway. Accounts obtained from commuters who witnessed the incident confirmed that the motorist was driving erratically prior to the crash.

The passenger, identified as David Jones, suffered fatal injuries in the accident, and medics responding at the scene pronounced him dead shortly after they arrived. They transported Alaniz to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The reports confirmed him in stable condition.

Officers believe DUI was a factor in the fatal crash that claimed Jones’ life. The incident remains under investigation.

Alaniz is likely to face DUI charges if the toxicology results reveal he was under the influence at the time. If found liable, the motorist would need to seek the legal representation of an experienced drunk driving attorney.
