Authorities are investigating a fatal crash which happened on Interstate 5 Freeway, North of San Diego’s Mission Bay area, leading to the demise of a 26-year-old La Mesa football star. The tragic incident took place on the morning of Saturday, March 7.
The California Highway Patrol confirmed the accident in a statement, reporting that the deceased athlete met his end after his car rolled down an embankment and collided with a tree near SeaWorld Drive.
According to the CHP Public Information Officer, Salvador Castro, the fatal wreck took place after 9 am on the Interstate 5 northbound lane in San Diego County. Authorities received distress calls around the time, alerting them of a fatal incident involving a GMC Escalade.
The deceased, who has since been identified as Jacob Eugene Arnell, was travelling solo along the northbound I-5 lane in a white GMC Escalade. He was reportedly driving above the speed limit in a bid to overtake other motorists.
The speed caused the 26-year-old athlete to sway off the freeway to the edge of an embankment. The vehicle rolled down the embankment and plunged violently into a tree, depositing some of the car’s contents, including a baby stroller and a backpack, in its wake.
Police arrived at the scene and found the wreckage, with detached vehicle parts scattered around. The motorist did not survive the ghastly accident.
As a result of the crash, two lanes along I-5 were closed for several hours until the car wreckage was cleared from the scene. The CHP gathered on-site evidence to facilitate further investigations.
