Desmond King Dies in Traffic Accident After Being Hit by DUI Motorist in Oakland

A man was killed in Oakland, California, after a driver suspected to have been under the influence struck him and three other pedestrians on a sidewalk. The incident, which left the three other victims hospitalized, took place on Sunday, March 29.

Police responded to the ghastly crash at about 6:51 pm. According to the Alameda County Coroner’s Office, the incident began when a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu driven by an alleged drunk driver was traveling through the west traffic lanes on Bancroft Avenue.

Just as the car approached the 5400 block, it slammed into a parked car sitting on the north curb, spiraled onto the sidewalk, and struck four pedestrians who were plying the footpath at the time, causing them major injuries.

Meanwhile, the operator of the Chevrolet alighted the wrecked car and fled on foot, but was apprehended a few blocks away.

One of the four men suffered fatal injuries and died on the scene, while the other three sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a hospital, where two were soon declared out of danger. The other surviving man remains in critical condition.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office revealed the identity of the deceased as 229-year-old Desmond King of Oakland.

The perpetrator of the traffic mishap remains in police custody, faced with multiple charges of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing injury as well as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Speed was also listed as a possible factor in the crash.
