Speeding is one of the predominant causes of motor vehicle accidents in California. Under the state’s Basic Speed Law, a driver must not drive faster than is safe for current road conditions, and never faster than the posted speed limit, even if it appears safe to do so.
The maximum speed limit on the state’s roadways is 65 miles per hour, and motorists can only drive at 70 mph if posted. Additionally, unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed limit for a two-lane undivided highway and vehicles towing trailers is 55 miles per hour.
