In the early hours of Saturday. 29 February, five people were involved in a fatal head-on collision on Highway 145 near Road 38 in Madera County, California, that killed two of them.
According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at 2:20 am when a 37-year-old resident of Madera driving a 2003 Honda Accord crashed into a 2015 Chrysler 300 driven by a 29-year-old resident of Hollister.
Authorities have revealed that the westbound Chrysler was overtaking another vehicle when it collided head-on with the oncoming Honda. The impact from the collision sent the Chrysler off the highway into a barbed fence where it overturned and caught fire.
The two yet to be identified drivers died from the injuries sustained in the accident. Three passengers from the two vehicles sustained severe injuries from the crash.
Madera resident, 45-year-old Lisa Deanna Pena, and San Ysidro resident, 35-year-old Daisy Figueroa, were traveling in the Honda Accord when the crash happened and sustained major injuries. They were airlifted to CRMC for immediate treatment
24-year-old Carlos LemosChamo, a passenger in the Chrysler, also sustained severe injuries. He was transported to CRMC by ground ambulance.
The identities of the drivers have not been revealed.
