The expertise of a drunk driving attorney would be useful following the arrest of an alleged DUI motorist who crashed a vehicle, causing the death of one person in Modesto, California. Deputies detained the man shortly after the crash on Sunday night, May 17.
The tragic incident took place just before 9:30 p.m. Officers reported that the suspect was driving just south of the Ninth Street exit, with Kalaina Tolden as his sole passenger. The 25-year-old Antioch woman did not survive the encounter.
Investigators determined the motorist, identified as Cariaun Williams, 24, of Turlock, was operating a 1997 Lexus. He was heading northbound on the roadway at a high rate of speed when his vehicle suddenly spiraled out of control. Police said the northbound Lexus drove into the median and hit a guardrail dividing the two opposing lanes of traffic.
The impact of the collision caused the Lexus to roll over onto its right side. The driver extricated himself from the vehicle, but Tolden remained pinned inside until the emergency rescue team arrived. Fire Department personnel rescued the trapped woman from the car and transported her to Doctor’s Medical Center. Hospital staff declared her dead shortly after her arrival.
Cariaun Williams suffered a minor laceration to his left wrist but was otherwise unscathed. Investigators determined the driver was impaired while behind the wheel. They took him into custody, on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury, and driving on a suspended license.
He remains held pending payment of a $125,000 bond. The suspect would need to seek legal counsel and representation from an experienced drunk driving attorney.
