The police in Sacramento, California, have identified the man who was killed in a vehicle-versus-motorcycle crash. They released his name on Thursday, March 12th, as Eddie Felix Avalos, 62.
The deceased passed away from the injuries he sustained when a car struck him while he was exiting the driveway of a friend’s home. California Highway Patrol said the accident occurred at about 7:20 p.m. on 66th Avenue.
Avalos, who was driving a 2008 Lancer Moped motorcycle, was ejected from it when a 2005 Acura MDX struck him. The driver of the Acura, identified as a 19-year-old male from Sacramento, came down from his vehicle and tried to help the deceased.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they took Avalos to the hospital for treatment, where he later died. The Acura driver also spoke with the police saying he could not avoid hitting the deceased.
The police said the young man was not impaired in any way and have ruled out drugs or alcohol as a possible cause. The crash remains under investigation.
When a motorcycle and a car collide, the rider of the former is always the worse for it due to the exposed nature of a bike. Statistics have shown that 60% of vehicle-versus-motorcycle accidents occur after sunset.
About 75% of motorcycle collisions involve at least one vehicle, and riders are killed 26 more times often than passenger car riders on a per-mile basis. Most bike accidents are caused by impaired drivers, with about 22.8% under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Helmets and protective coverings are vital to prevent injuries and fatalities, and motorcycle riders should always have them on.
