Eddy Lopez Identified as Victim of San Diego Suspected DUI Crash

The police in San Diego, California, confirmed on Monday, March 9th, the identity of the person who died in a single-vehicle crash over the weekend. They identified him as Eddy Lopez, 23, of Chula Vista.

The accident which the police said was DUI-related occurred on the freeway near the US-Mexico border. The preliminary report by the California Highway Patrol showed that Lopez was driving and lost control of a black Nissan Sentra.

The young man was going above the speed limit on the lanes heading south on Interstate 5 in San Ysidro a little after 11 p.m. on Saturday, March 7th. The Nissan veered off the right side of the road, went down an embankment before overturning and resting on its roof on Via de San Ysidro.

Lopez had extensive injuries, and he passed away before the paramedics arrived. The young man had a passenger, who was identified as a 22-year-od male from San Diego.

The passenger was severely injured and was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment. The CHP is still investigating the primary cause of the accident.

When the driver who caused an accident dies, and there’s evidence of impairment on his or her part, then the victim who survives can bring a civil lawsuit against the estate of the deceased driver.

The victim usually files a personal injury lawsuit and must prove on the preponderance of the evidence that he or she suffered some loss as a result of the accident. The court on establishing that the driver was negligent and the victim indeed suffered an injury will grant damages, which is monetary compensation.
