A woman was tragically killed on Sunday morning after her vehicle slammed head-on into another while traveling through the wrong traffic lane on Interstate 580 in Livermore, California. The fatal collision took place on Sunday, March 29, at about 6:21 am.
According to the California Highway Patrol, several road users called in prior to the occurrence, reporting a wrong-way driver on I-580, first observed near the Greenville Road exit.
Subsequent calls described the traffic offender as a young female operating a 2004 Buick LeSabre and traveling towards North Livermore Avenue.
Dublin-CHP officials were dispatched to I-580 to look into the situation. However, before their arrival, the traffic disruption resulted in a fatal collision.
Investigators gathered that the operator of the LeSabre was driving west through the eastbound traffic lanes on the state route when she collided head-on with an oncoming 2014 Nissan Altima maintaining the right path.
As a result of the crash, the woman sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on the scene by officials of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire department.
The fatal victim, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was identified as 24-year-old Gabriella Perez-Ramirez of Manteca. Police suspect Gabriella was intoxicated at the time of the tragic wreck.
Meanwhile, the other motorist involved, a 33-year-old female from Newark, name withheld, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Eden Medical Center by ground ambulance.
Following the accident, authorities shut down the east lanes on I-580 for 75 minutes until the two wrecked cars were towed away, and on-site investigations concluded.
