The pedestrian who was killed earlier this week on Mission Boulevard in Fremont, California, after being struck by a vehicle in motion, has been identified. Authorities on Friday, March 20, disclosed the fatal victim’s identity as Joseph Hennessey, 73.
The tragic incident took place at about 6 am on Thursday, March 19, on a major East Bay boulevard, which doubles as state Highway 238.
According to police reports, a Honda Sedan travelling through the north traffic lane on Mission Road suddenly collided with a pedestrian on its path.
The crash victim suffered severe injuries as a result and was declared dead on arrival of emergency responders.
The circumstances surrounding the encounter remain unclear, as investigative findings did not determine if the pedestrian kept to the crosswalk while moving to the other side of the road prior to the crash.
A representative of the Fremont Police department, Geneva Bosques, confirmed that the street was not properly lit at the time of the traffic collision, which may have contributed to the driver’s impairment.
Following the crash, the motorist pulled over and waited at the scene until the police arrived. The driver, whose name was not disclosed, cooperated with authorities during interrogation.
Drugs and alcohol were not suspected to have played a part in the fatality. No criminal charges were levelled against the operator of the Honda.
The fatal accident shut down the north travel lanes of Mission Boulevard for about four hours while authorities followed through with the necessary on-site investigations.
