Fatal Victim of Traffic Wreck Between Hemet and Idyllwild Identified as Luis Alberto Lopez-Perez

In updated reports of a car accident which happened over the weekend, authorities disclosed the identity of male passenger who died in San Jacinto Valley, California. The California Highway Patrol announced the victim’s identity in a news release on Tuesday, May 19, as Luis Alberto Lopez-Perez, 41, of Moreno Valley.

The fatal wreck happened at precisely 3:55 p.m., on Sunday, May 17, on San Jacinto Ridge Truck Trail, between Hemet and Idyllwild. Police said the victim was a passenger in a four-wheeled vehicle that drove off the road and skidded down an incline.

Initial reports suggested two men were traveling in a Polaris RZR, along the San Jacinto Truck Trail, just north of Highway 74. Edgar Benjamin Lopez-Mauricio was behind the wheels of the Polaris, which suddenly veered off the unpaved roadway in the mountainous area. The car continued down a steep embankment, coming to rest at the bottom and ejecting its two occupants in the process.

The emergency crew got whiff of the mishap shortly after and commenced a search and rescue operation through the mountains on foot and via helicopter. They eventually found the driver walking up a dirt embankment. Police said he was with serious injuries at the time, and a helicopter flew him to a hospital for treatment.

The search continued until they discovered the second victim about 250 feet down the embankment. Lopez-Perez was lifeless at the time.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the crash.

Traffic officers urge witnesses to report car accidents immediately they occur to facilitate a timely response.
