Hannah Smith, 23, ended up in a hospital after an accident in Redding, California, left her with severe injuries. The Sasha Lake resident was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Sunday, March 15th.
The accident occurred at about 11:24 a.m. at the intersection of North Market Street and Arboretum Drive. A preliminary accident report showed that a female driver, Hanna McCuan, 20, drove a Dodge sedan through a red light at the intersection.
The young woman was texting and didn’t know when she drove through until she slammed into the Kia sedan driven by Smith, who was turning east onto Arboretum from the southbound North Market Lane.
Paramedics at the scene of the accident took the injured Smith to a local hospital, while McCuan seemed to escape unscathed. The young woman stayed at the scene to talk with the authorities and admitted to texting while driving.
The report did not state if the authorities cited the young driver or if she will get charged for negligent driving resulting in bodily harm. Based on statistics, McCuan is one out of about 660 000 people in the United States who text and drive.
Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of accidents, and some experts say it’s as dangerous as drunk people. Texting and driving are common among young people, especially teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19.
Traffic officials have advised drivers to avoid all and every form of distraction while driving. Drivers should not peel their eyes off the road and obey traffic signs at intersections.
