Authorities, on Thursday, May 14, identified Henry Melendez, 26, as the alleged hit-and-run driver that killed a pedestrian in a collision on 98th Avenue, Oakland, California. Accident reports revealed that the crash happened earlier in the year on January 17.

Police reports state that the suspect was driving a white Nissan Maxima when he struck the victim of the crash, Miesha Singleton, 40. The woman was walking in the 1800-block of 98th Avenue.

Before the collision happened, Melendez passed another vehicle that stopped to allow the victim to cross the road in a marked crosswalk. She was on her way to pick up her child from Elmhurst United Middle School. The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. near Bancroft Avenue.

After the crash, paramedics arrived at the scene and pronounced Singleton dead. However, Melendez didn’t stop to render any assistance to the victim but fled the area. Officers found his vehicle abandoned days later. It had visible damage to its front passenger side windshield.

The police are yet to find and arrest the suspect. They describe him as a Latino man, weighing 137 pounds and 5-foot-7 tall. He has brown eyes and dark hair. Anyone with any information on the accident or the suspect can contact the Oakland Police Department at 510-777-8570. They can also call Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.

If involved in an accident, do not flee the scene of the crash. Remain and seek medical assistance if needed, and wait for the police to arrive. Accident reports show that many people leave accident scenes, putting themselves at risk of facing the wrath of the law.
