A fatal head-on collision on Highway 33, Kern County, California, on Sunday, March 15th, left a man dead and another with severe injuries. The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Sebastian Alberto Martinez, 21, and the injured man as Cole Roberts, 20.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Martinez, a resident of Bakersfield, was heading south on Highway 33 in a Toyota Camry near Baker Road, south of Kern-Kings County Line at about 9:40 p.m.
Suddenly, his Toyota drifted into the northbound lanes, going directly into the part of a GMC vehicle driven by Roberts, a resident of Paso Robles. The younger man could do nothing to avoid Martinez in time, and the two collided head-on.
The collision involved a third vehicle that struck the Toyota, and Martinez died before paramedics could get to him. The GMC driver was pinned beneath his car, and it took the efforts of the Kern County Fire Department to get him out.
Roberts had severe injuries and was taken by ambulance to Kern Medical Center. The third driver, whose name and car model, didn’t get revealed, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
The CHP has not stated if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. They are still investigating what caused the deceased to drift and will update the public once they have more information.
Accidents claim lives daily all over California, and drivers are advised to exercise utmost caution while on the road, to preserve their lives and that of others.
