The Huntington Beach Police Department, on Sunday, August 23rd, detained a man suspected of driving while intoxicated and killing his passenger. 21-year-old Miguel Guzman encountered the solo-car crash while driving through a highway in Huntington Beach, California.
In a press release, a Huntington police spokesperson, Sgt. Joshua Page confirmed that one person died, while another suffered minor injuries. At about 12:50a.m., Huntington Beach officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run collision on Springdale Street and McFadden Avenue. They found Guzman, and a passenger pinned inside a wrecked vehicle.
Investigators later determined that the crash was not a hit-and-run as reported, but a single-vehicle crash. Huntington Beach firefighters extricated the victims from the wrecked vehicle. An ambulance transported them to UCL Medical Center with injuries. The passenger, a resident of Moreno Valley, succumbed to his wounds shortly after. Police withheld the victim’s name pending notification of his next of kin.
They later determined Guzman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and put him under arrest.
The Huntington Beach police traffic investigation unit is heading up the investigation into the fatal wreck. They urged anyone with helpful information about the crash to contact the department on their public lines.
DUI crashes rank among the leading causes of traffic fatalities in the state of California. The impaired motorists are usually at fault in such collisions. The offense attracts penalties ranging from legal fines to prolonged prison sentences, which can be reviewed by a drunk driving attorney.
