A 20-year-old man lost his life in a collision on Highway 99 near Ripon, California, on Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s office identified him as Jonathan Williams. Reports showed that he lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a big rig.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred before 2:30 p.m. on the northbound H-99 south of Main Street in Ripon. Williams rode a 2009 Kawasaki bike at about 60 miles per hour, splitting traffic between the No. 1 lane and No. 2 lane.
The investigators said that the victim lost control of his motorcycle. It fell to its side, sliding into the trailer of a Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling in the No. 2 lane. He became entangled in the fourth and fifth axles of the vehicle, and it ran him over. The man died at the scene.
The driver of the Freightliner, a 63-year-old Manteca resident, did not sustain any injury. The crash led to the closure of the two lanes of traffic, which caused heavy congestion on the roadway. The CHP reopened it after gathering evidence and clearing the scene.
Auto-motorcycle accidents are one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths in California. Motorcyclists are prone to more severe and fatal injuries due to the open design of the bike and the lack of protection the body has when it hits the ground. Riders can mitigate the two by wearing a US-DOT compliant helmet, protective apparel, and riding within the speed limit.
