A woman from Hemet, 28 miles from Riverside, California, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, March 3rd while undergoing treatment at the hospital. Kathryn Hann, 60, lived less than a day after a car knocked her down while riding a scooter in Hemet.
The collision took place on Monday, March 2nd, at about 3:30 p.m. at Mayberry Avenue and Palm Street. According to the Hemet Police Department, the deceased stopped at a traffic sign before turning east on Mayberry Avenue.
As Hann traveled down the street, she was hit by a pickup truck that was traveling west, when it turned into Palm Street. The vehicle crashed into the scooter as it traveled between 10 and 15 miles per hour, and threw the woman off it.
Hann sustained significant injuries and was taken to the Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment. However, despite the best effort of doctors, the woman passed away at 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
The driver of the truck stopped and cooperated with the authorities. The police have not stated if drugs or alcohol played a role or if the driver will get charged.
In California, the circumstances of a case determine if a driver would get cited when a death or injury occurs in an accident. The first thing the courts look out for is the degree of negligence the driver exhibited at the time of the accident.
The latter would determine the degree of punishment the person gets in a criminal trial, and the damages awarded in a civil lawsuit.
