A 22-year-old man received a 15-year-prison sentence for his role in a two-vehicle crash that claimed three lives in the Lancaster area of California. According to the Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Yoobin Hernandez, the convict, Davion Murphy, was sentenced on Wednesday, July 22nd.
The deputy DA said that the man apologized to the members of the victims’ family, and two out of the three offered their forgiveness. The jury found Murphy guilty of three counts of second-degree murder on March 9th for the crash that killed Yovany Salazar Calzada, 23, Rocio Perez Lopez, 26, and Virginia Martinez, 61.
The collision happened on January 11th, 2018, at the corner of Avenue J-8 and Challenger Way. The accident report showed that Murphy’s silver Lexus slammed into the side of the Subaru WRX, conveying the victims.
Deputy District Attorney Casey Higgins, who prosecuted the case alongside Hernandez, said that a post-blood test showed that the man was under the influence of marijuana. Witnesses also reported seeing him smoke the drug about 30 to 45 minutes before the crash.
The Deputy DA added that the convict drove through a red light and traveled at least 88 mph in a 40 mph zone. The man and his three passengers survived the crash, and officers with the Lancaster Police placed him under arrest. Murphy has been in jail since 2018, and he would serve out his sentence in state prison. There is no additional information.
