Leonel L. Martinez, Passengers Suffer Major Injuries in Amador County Car Wreck

Three people have been hospitalized with severe injuries following a fatal two-vehicle head-on collision on Highway 16 in the Plymouth area of Amador County, California. The tragic occurrence, which left at least two people dead, took place on Sunday night, March 29.

The tragic incident was reported at about 7:55 pm, police said. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2013 Volkswagen Passat, driven by Leonel L. Martinez, was driving through Highway 16, with three passengers on board.

At the same time, another vehicle, a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze operated by a woman, who was the sole occupant of the car, was also traveling on the same route, moving towards the Passat.

For unknown reasons, the two vehicles suddenly collided head-on, near Welsh Pond Road, causing serious damages to both cars.

As a result of the crash, the operator of the Chevrolet, and a juvenile male passenger in the Volkswagen, suffered fatal injuries and were confirmed dead on the scene.

However, Leonel Martinez and two other occupants survived the crash with critical injuries and were rushed to trauma centers via air ambulance by paramedics accompanying the responding Amador County Fire Department personnel.

While the identities of the fatal victims were not disclosed in the accident reports, authorities identified the two other survivors as Sandra C. Saucedo and Augusto L. Martinez. It remains uncertain if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the tragic wreck.

Following the crash, the CHP shut down parts of Highway 16 for several hours while investigations and clean-up were conducted.
