Lime and Segway Face Negligence Lawsuit for San Francisco Scooter Accidents

On Wednesday, August 19th, nearly 50 people filed a negligence lawsuit against the scooter rental company based in San Francisco, California, Lime, and the scooter maker, Segway. The plaintiffs instituted the action in San Francisco Superior Court.

The court documents showed that the plaintiffs claim that they sustained injuries because of faulty and improperly maintained devices by Lime. They alleged that the wounds cover broken bones, head trauma, and broken teeth amid other injuries.

The plaintiffs are also claiming that Segway poorly manufactured the scooters. The white-and-green ride became a regular sight on San Francisco streets and other parts of the Bay Area in 2018. Users unlock the bikes with a smartphone app and a fee and Lime employs workers to pick up and change the electronic ride before putting it back into service.

The suit also alleges that Segway manufactured the scooters with insufficient safety measures. Lime distributed the devices on the streets of the city and across the country but failed to keep them in safe working order. The two reportedly led to faulty brakes, throttles, wheels, and handles amid others.

The rental company responded to the lawsuit on Wednesday with a press statement. They stated that their highest priority is their riders’ safety, and they take claims of injuries from their products seriously.

Lime said that they are reviewing the lawsuit’s claims, and as a global leader in micro-mobility, they are working tirelessly to ensure the security of their riders on their scooters and bikes. There is no statement from Segway at this time.

The Plaintiffs are claiming against the defendants’ strict product liability, negligence, breach of implied warranty of fitness for a particular or intended purpose, and breach of implied warranty of merchantability.
