Long Beach Pedestrian Accident Victim IDd as Velton Johnson

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office and the Long Beach Police Department, California, on Thursday, March 19th, released the name of the man who died in a pedestrian accident. He is 37-year-old Velton Johnson.

The LACCO and LBPD said that the man died from the wounds he sustained after getting hit by two cars on Monday, March 16th, at about 9:55 p.m. The accident occurred precisely at Seventh Street in Long Beach.

Johnson, who was a social studies teacher at YouthBuild Charter School in Los Angeles, was crossing the northbound lane on east Seventh Street, west of Ultimo Avenue, when a vehicle struck him down.

The driver of the unidentified vehicle didn’t stop to help the teacher but fled the scene. Before help could come to Johnson, he was hit again by a driver identified as a 61-year-old Long Beach female, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The woman stopped, called 911 and tried to assist the man. Paramedics found Johnson lying on the roadway, but despite their best efforts, he died before they could take him to the hospital.

The LBPD did not cite or arrest the driver of the Cherokee, and they are actively investigating the case. The LBPD is searching for the driver who fled and has asked witnesses to call their Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail.

A hit-and-run is a serious traffic offense in California that is considered a “Wobbler.” The latter means that prosecutors try it as a misdemeanor or felony, and a conviction means time in prison, a fine, or both.
