Father and Son Bicyclist Killed During Malibu Grand Tour


A bicycle accident on Sunday occurred between father and son Grand Tour bicyclists and a hit and run drunk driver, who was located and arrested later. According to reports, the father and son were bicycling on the Pacific Coast when they were struck by a drunk driver, Robert Sanchez, who fled the scene after hitting both bicyclists. Sanchez, a 30-year-old male, drove his truck into the bicyclists at 1:30 am at a location near Nicolas Beach Road. Father bicyclist Rodrigo Armas, aged 44, died on the scene of the hit and run accident after being struck by the drunk driver. Armas was a Los Angeles County Deputy Probation Officer from Kern County.

The son, whose name was not released, suffered multiple injuries including “numerous broken bones,” officials reported. The bicycle accident put an unfortunate end to the father and son’s participation in an ride knows as the Grand Tour, involving a 200 mile bike ride centered around Malibu. Sanchez, who was determined to have been drunk, faces likely charges of felony vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and hit and run.
