A woman injured in a head-on crash Monday night in the San Fernando Valley that killed an infant was intoxicated at the time of the wreck, local authorities reported Tuesday.
Irlanda Sanchez, 23, was driving east on Nordhoff Street at about 11:45 p.m. Monday when she crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle, Los Angeles Police Department officials told local media outlets. The crash occurred near Tobias Avenue.
Police said Sanchez’ three children were with her at the time. One infant boy later was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, while the boy’s twin continued to receive treatment, according to authorities. An older child suffered injuries but is expected to survive.
The names of the children weren’t publicly disclosed.
The driver of the other vehicle also sustained injuries in the wreck and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The man, whose name was not released by authorities, is expected to survive.
Sanchez suffered injuries that required hospitalization in the wreck as well, police said. She was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of murder and remains held on a $2 million bond.
Photos of the scene published by local media outlets show extreme damage to the front ends of both SUVs. Debris was scattered across the roadway and it appeared that one or more vehicles parked on the street might have been struck in the aftermath of the crash.
