A former officer of the Department of Homeland Security was sentenced to serve a three-year jail time as penalty for killing a man and leaving the deceased’s wife severely injured in a car crash while driving under the influence of alcohol.
The drunk driver was convicted on Monday, March 2, by a downtown Los Angeles County Court in California.
The accident took place on September 18, 2017, at the Interstate 10 Freeway in Pomona, California. The case was first presented before a Los Angeles court and filed on February 28, last year.
According to police reports, the sentenced 26-year-old man, Luis Angel Ureno, was driving along the road at high speed when he hit the rear of a vehicle occupied by Hector Soltero, 42, and his wife, Roxana Pena Beltran.
Ureno was charged with felony, on one count each of vehicular manslaughter while under the influence, causing injury to another, and driving with a 0.08 percent blood alcohol content resulting in injury.
The 29-year-old made an appearance last month in a Los Angeles courtroom, where he pleaded no contest to the charges. Prior to his February court hearing, the DUI driver pleaded not guilty when the charges were levelled against him in a March 2019 hearing.
The convicted man was an employee with the Department of Homeland Security at the time of the accident. However, his employment status with the organization was withheld following his manslaughter charges and subsequent conviction, as reported by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
