Eight people went to the hospital and at least a dozen received injuries after a Lunar New Year fireworks accident. Two of the hospitalized victims received traumatic injuries. The incident happened in Garden Grove, California early Saturday morning on January 26, 2020.
The Lunar New Year fireworks display was apparently a planned event that took place near Euclid Street and Westminster Avenue. Fire officials reported that the pyrotechnic devices used were professional grade.
At around 12:11 a.m., fireworks shot into the crowd.
Because it was a celebration, there were large crowds. This made it difficult for paramedics to get through to those injured. The organizers continued the display despite the injured spectators, possibly because they did not realize anyone had been harmed.
The Santa Ana police said they were not investigating, as they consider it an accident. According to them, no criminal offense occurred.
An official from the Orange County Fire Authority said that the OCFA was aware of the event. However, they did not say who was responsible for organizing the event or overseeing the Lunar New Year fireworks show. However, anyone seriously injured in this incident may wish to seek legal representation to be compensated for their losses.
