On Wednesday morning, September 23rd, an accident in California’s San Bernardino area killed a woman and led to a male driver’s arrest. The car accident report disclosed the victim’s name as Maria Munoz, 62, and the motorist as Alexis Navarette, 23.
According to the San Bernardino Police Department, the crash took place around 6:16 p.m, at the intersection of Mountain View Avenue and Magnolia Avenue. Navarette drove a Lexus ES350 southbound on Mountain at high speed.
The vehicle then collided with a Toyota Camry driven by a 72-year-old woman. The second vehicle was northbound on Mountain and trying to turn onto westbound Magnolia. The police said that Munoz was a passenger in the Toyota, and she died while undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Navarette, his passenger, and other occupants of the Camry suffered non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment. The police said that they believe speed and drugs played a role in the occurrence.
The SBPD arrested the driver for vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing injury, hit-and-run with injury, and child endangerment. The investigation is ongoing.
Speed is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents on California’s roadway. The state has a Basic Speed Law meaning that a driver must not go faster than is safe for road conditions.
Regardless of the posted speed limit, a motorist must note the number and speed of other vehicles on the roadway. Consider whether the road surface is smooth, rough, graveled, wet, dry, wide, or narrow, and whether it is raining, foggy, snowing, windy, or dusty.
