On Sunday, March 1st, a woman lost her life in West Covina, California, after getting knocked down by a vehicle. The accident happened at night time, and authorities identified the deceased as Maria Olga Cardona-Ramirez, 77, of La Puente.

At about 6:14 p.m. on the unfortunate day, the West Covina Police Department received a “Person down” call from an accident near Valinda Avenue and Dore Street. On arrival, they found Cardona-Ramirez lying on the roadway.

A preliminary investigation uncovered that the woman was about to cross the street after leaving a nearby strip mall when a car coming from Valinda Avenue struck her down. According to Lieutenant Huston Clements of the WCPD, the driver, who remains unnamed, did not see Cardona-Ramirez.

The deceased was unresponsive when the medics examined her, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Drugs or alcohol or a combination of both did not play a role in the accident, and the police did not cite the driver for negligent driving.

When a car hits a pedestrian, it leads to injuries that are either fatal or life-altering. A vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident victim can sustain a traumatic brain injury, organ damage, or crushed bones that require amputation.

The victim can also have tibia fractures, lacerations and resulting scarring, spinal injuries, and nerve damage. Anyone involved in an accident can contact an attorney and seek redress from the courts in monetary compensation.

Accident victims can also bring third-party claims against the insurance company of the driver involved in the accident. When this happens, the person is entitled to a settlement, which is often done out of court.
