A man narrowly escaped with his life after a hit-and-run driver left him for dead. Authorities on Friday, February 21st, identified the man as Mark Weesner, an Air Force veteran.
Weesner was at a traffic stop at the intersection of Lewis and Holdener Road, Solano County, waiting for the light to change when an unidentified driver slammed into him. The latter ran a red light.
The impact of the crash caused the veteran’s truck to turn over. The vehicle rolled on the roadway and kept going until it rested on its roof, with Weesner trapped inside.
The injured man, who survived over two decades in the Air Force, remained in that position until first responders arrived. They got Weesner out of the wrecked truck and attended to his injuries before transporting him to the hospital.
The veteran suffered a fractured spine, eight broken ribs, and ligament tears in his neck. Weesner feels lucky to be alive and is working with the California Highway Patrol to track down the driver.
Michelle Pokipala, the veteran’s daughter, has given the CHP a photo of the car she believes hit her dad and has also circulated it herself. CHP investigations showed that the driver left the vehicle at the scene.
However, the authorities have not been able to track down the driver, and currently have no information on his or her person or whereabout. They have asked anyone with helpful information to contact their Solano office.
Weesner has also pleaded with the driver to come forward and take responsibility for his or her action. He is expected to make a full recovery with months of physical therapy.
