Prolific motocross rider Marty Smith, who is revered for winning 18 national motocross titles, has died at the age of 63. Smith died along with his wife Nancy in a dune buggy accident in the California desert on Monday, April 27th. Accident reports state that the couple was in the buggy riding through the Imperial Sand Dunes when the vehicle flipped over.
Smith’s death was confirmed by Brett Smith, a motocross journalist, via a press release. The couple, who were married forty years, is survived by three children, daughters Brooke and Jillyin, and son Tyler. The family shared a passion for dune buggies and motocross racing.
Lee Ramage and his wife, Tummi, who were close friends of the late couple, were in the buggy with them when the accident occurred. They remained with the couple and tried to perform first aid while waiting for first responders to arrive.
Ramage said that Smith was his best friend and that he did his best to save him. Many friends and fans of Smith, after hearing accident reports about his death, posted condolences and tributes in his honor on social media.
Marty Smith began racing at the age of 13 after being influenced by his father, who was a firefighter. From competing at a young age with men many years older than him, the late motocross racer rose to prominence. He suffered multiple injuries during his illustrious career that forced him to retire from the sport at the age of 24.
