California Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a Sunday morning crash that claimed the life of a Cotati man.
Matthew Cossey, 35, died form injuries sustained in the wreck, which occurred early Sunday morning on U.S. 101, the California Highway Patrol reported. No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Authorities said Cossey was driving north on U.S. 101 just after 5:30 a.m. Sunday when he lost control of his pickup truck near the Nave Drive exit, not far from the border between Novato and San Rafael. The truck rolled over, coming to rest on its roof.
Cossey reportedly was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. He died from his injuries at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A spokesman for the state law enforcement agency told local media outlets that they believe Cossey lost control of his vehicle on a wet roadway. Cossey also apparently was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the wreck. It’s unclear other factors also contributed to the incident.
The ensuing investigation prompted a multi-hour closure of the highway while emergency personnel worked at the scene. The highway didn’t reopen until after 8 a.m. Sunday, according to troopers.
