The authorities have identified the man who got hit in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident in Long Beach. On Friday, February 21st, they released his name as Melaku Madhin, 62, of Lakewood.
Madhin didn’t die from his wounds immediately after the accident. He got taken to the hospital where he was receiving treatment, until he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, February 14th.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident which put the deceased in the hospital occurred nine days before he died, on February 5th. Madhin got hit at about 7 p.m. on South Street near Downey Avenue.
The deceased was trying to cross the street when a 2003 Toyota Tacoma, driven by an unnamed 23-year-old man from Wisconsin, knocked him down. First responders stabilized him at the scene of the accident before taking him to the hospital.
The authorities did not cite the driver for negligence or impairment. They are still investigating the surrounding circumstances of the accident, and have not revealed any additional information.
Vehicle-on-pedestrian accidents are not uncommon in California. Pedestrians should, therefore, follow the safety tips on crossing the road to prevent injuries and fatalities.
Pedestrians should always have a plan before venturing across the road. They should use the safest spots, and places marked for crossing and with zebra signs.
Step a bit away from the edge of the walkway, and watch to see where the cars are coming from and how fast they are going. Listen for traffic in all directions, and when at an intersection, ensure that the walk sign is on before crossing.
