On Saturday, May 30th, a fatal motorcycle traffic accident claimed the life of a 34-year-old man in Mission Viejo, California, an accident report states. The Orange County Coroner Division of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department named the victim as Nicholas Horton.
The crash report released by the California Highway Patrol placed the accident on Interstate 5 Freeway. It occurred precisely on the San Diego (5) Freeway at Oso Parkway at approximately 11:15 p.m. The investigators said that for unknown reasons, Horton crashed into the middle divider of the roadway.
Several motorists parked and alighted from their vehicles to provide first aid to the injured motorcyclists, but their efforts were in vain. The paramedics declared the man dead, and the coroner identified him.
The CHP said they did not determine if another motorist was involved in the accident, and they did not release any additional detail. They closed off the lanes affected by the fatal crash and issued a SigAlert to use alternative routes.
The investigation into the tragic accident is ongoing, and the investigators will release an update later.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles, relying on accident reports, states that most motorcycle crashes happen on short trips, usually less than five miles long. Most riders are often going less than 30 miles per hour when accidents occur.
At such speed, a US-DOT compliant helmet cut the number and severity of head injuries by 50 percent. Motorcycle riders should always have the headgear on and maintain the speed limit.
