Nevada City’s Wilford Robinson, Accused Of Abusing Elderly Wife, To Undergo Mental Evaluation

A judge has halted proceedings against a Nevada City man accused of abusing his 81-year-old wife while the court determines whether he is competent to stand trial.

Wilford G. Robinson, 79, was charged in late February with spousal abuse causing great bodily injury and torture. The latter charge carries a potential life sentence upon conviction.

Police said Robinson’s wife, an 81-year-old woman suffering from advanced dementia, was taken to a hospital Feb. 12 with two broken femurs. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the possible abuse and an investigation was launched.

Robinson was arrested Feb. 21 after investigators determined that he broken both of his wife’s legs during a domestic abuse incident days prior to her arrival at the hospital, according to authorities. He was held on a $750,000 bond.

According to court records, Robinson was due to enter a plea this week. However, his attorney, a public defender, raised questions about Robinson’s mental capacity and ability to be active in his criminal defense.

Prosecutors and a superior court judge agree to suspend further hearings and proceedings until an evaluation can be completed by a psychiatrist. A new hearing date was tentatively set for April 23.
