Norris Whittington Jr.’s Life Ends in Pomona (60) Freeway Chain-Reaction Crash

During the early hours of Monday, August 31st, a man died following a chain-reaction crash on Pomona (60) Freeway in the Baldwin Park area of California. 55-year-old Norris R. Whitington Jr., of Bellflower, began the chain of events that led to the incident that claimed his life.

Facts from the car accident report placed the time of the occurrence around 1:10 a.m. at the Diamond Bar Boulevard. Rodrigo Jimenez, with the California Highway Patrol, said that Whitington operated a flatbed tractor-trailer. He swerved to avoid a slow-moving vehicle and ended up crashing.

A piece of heavy equipment fell off the truck onto the freeway, causing hydraulic fluid to spill. It left a 200-foot trail, and the debris caused 15 cars to suffer an accident, with a driver and a passenger complaining of pain. Jimenez said that the two declined medical attention.

The CHP issued a SigAlert around 1:40 a.m. to close off the roadway, and it remained in effect until about 7 a.m. The investigators do not believe that drugs or alcohol contributed to the occurrence in any capacity, but the investigation remains active.

Witnesses should contact Officer Sergio Garcia using the listed line of the highway patrol’s Baldwin Park office. There is no additional information.

A chain-reaction accident occurs when one vehicle’s act or conduct sets off a chain of events that causes other cars on the roadway to crash. Drivers must avoid this type of accident by practicing safe road behaviors and driving carefully always.
