The police in Corona, California, on Sunday, March 15th, announced they have taken into custody the man that caused an auto collision in the city. Anurag Chandra, 42, was arrested on suspicion of intentionally ramming his vehicle into another.
The accident, according to the California Highway Patrol occurred late on the night of Sunday, March 8th. Chandra was driving a white Infiniti sedan which he crashed into a Toyota Prius carrying three teenagers.
The collision sent the Toyota into a tree in the Temescal Valley, leaving its occupants trapped. Firefighters who responded to a 911 call extricated three of the teenagers from the car, and one of them was pronounced dead immediately.
Two others passed away at the hospital, and the three have been identified as Daniel Hawkins, 16, of Corona, Drake Ruiz, 16, also of Corona, and Jacob Ivascu, 16, of Riverside. The remaining three teenagers whose names are withheld had injuries, but are expected to survive.
The CHP believes that Chandra might have known the teenagers, and intentionally targeted them. The man fled the scene after the accident, and witnesses helped the authorities in tracking him down.
The front dented side of the Infiniti also contributed. Chandra is now facing charges of suspicion of homicide, and assault with a deadly weapon; there is no information on whether the man will be let out on bail.
The police have ruled out drugs or alcohol as influencing elements in the crash. The dead teenagers are being mourned by members of their community, who have described the loss as a tragedy.
