The Corning Police Department, in California, on Thursday, March 5th, captured the man involved in a police chase auto crash. James Smith, 54, was arrested and taken into custody at about 8 a.m.
According to the police, they had engaged in an overnight chase with Smith after he failed to stop when they tried to pull him over for running a stop sign. The latter occurred on Wednesday night, March 3rd.
The chase started at about 10 p.m. and continued for a short while, with Smith, driving his ’92 Honda Accord trying to lose the police in an orchard off Kraft Avenue. The man collided with a tree, and then backed his car straight into a patrol vehicle.
Smith sustained no injuries from the crash, and he fled the scene on foot through the orchard. The police then called the helicopter crew of the California Highway Patrol, as well as the K-9 unit and officers from the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office, to help track the suspect down.
The police also found 1.6 ounces of methamphetamine in Smith’s crashed car, making them believe he was driving under the influence of drugs. They have not stated what they are charging the man with.
The driver has a criminal record, which would affect his application for bail. California law frowns against people fleeing the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
One is a hit-and-run offense and the other a DUI charge. Both are criminal in nature and carry jail time upon conviction, a fine, or both.
