A helicopter conveyed a pedestrian to the Mercy Medical Center, Redding, following a near-fatal accident in the parking lot of a hospital in Red Bluff, California. The Tuesday, July 14th, accident left Consuelo Gonzales, 41, severely injured.
Facts from the accident report showed that the woman was walking in the parking lot of St. Elizabeth Community Outpatient’s Imaging Center when an eastbound vehicle struck her. Medical personnel at the center took Gonzales inside the facility before the air ambulance conveyed her to Mercy.
The Red Bluff Police said the report about the crash came in at about 7 p.m. The male driver involved, identified as 59-year-old James Obrien of Redding, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigating officers. The man told them that he did not see Gonzales due to the glare of the sun.
The police have not cited the driver for the incident, and the investigation is ongoing. Auto-pedestrian crashes in California are not uncommon, and they are one of the leading causes of deaths in the state. Data from the Cal-Office of Traffic Safety show that the state has more pedestrian accidents than most parts of the United States.
While drivers are presumed to be at fault in this type of collision, OTS states that pedestrians also share the blame. To reduce the high and increasing rate of auto-pedestrian crashes, the agency admonishes that both sides of the divide should practice safe road behaviors to protect themselves and those around them.
