Two California Highway Patrol officers got involved in an accident this Sunday. The two have been identified as Russell Smith and Mitchell Perez.

The accident happened in the early hours of the morning on Highway 101 near Fulton Drive. The CHP officers were in their patrol vehicle when they got hit from behind by a 1997 Nissan Versa.

25-year-old Eric Reab of Santa Rosa drove the Nissan. He was traveling south when he slammed into the rear of the patrol driven by Smith and overturned until the car rested on its right shoulder.

The patrol vehicle also stopped on the right leaving the two officers’ with minor injuries. Smith and Perez were taken to the Memorial Hospital, where they got treated and were later released.

Reab was arrested at the scene of the accident and got booked into the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of DUI. He is currently facing DUI charges causing injury and a misdemeanor charge for allegedly refusing to take a field sobriety test.

The suspect had his bail set at $100 000. The CHP and the police are coordinating on the investigation, and it is still ongoing as they try to piece the facts together.

Under California Vehicle Code 23153, DUI causing injury leads to three years in county jail and a fine, not less than $5000. The accused person may also get his driver’s license suspended for up to three years.

The refusal to take a sobriety test bags a fine and a year driver’s license suspension. Also, the police can hold the person for up to 48 hours when there is no accident involved.
