The 51-year-old resident of Ukiah who died while fleeing from the police in Santa Rosa, California, has been identified as Sean Bell. The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office made the identification on Wednesday, August 5th.
The car accident report filed by the Santa Rosa Police Department revealed that the accident happened on Tuesday, August 4th. According to the investigators, Bell suffered life-threatening injuries after getting ejected from the Subaru Forester he was driving; he crashed into a light pole.
The crash happened near Taco Bell at the Santa Rosa Marketplace on Santa Rosa Avenue. The police said that before the incident, an officer approached the victim’s car with his gun drawn after he noticed him hitting a woman inside the vehicle near Costco parking lot.
The officer ordered the man out of the car, and the distraction allowed the woman to escape. Bell then drove away, driving erratically through a parking lot on Santa Rosa, where he sideswiped a car before losing control. The police indicated that the officer was chasing the man when he crashed, and they placed the lawman on administrative leave after the collision.
The report did not state if the driver passed away at the scene or the hospital. But it revealed that the man matched the description of a driver involved in a hit-and-run accident in Sonoma County on Monday, August 3rd. There is currently no additional information on the two occurrences, and the SRPD will release updates at a later time.
