The California Highway Patrol revealed in a Thursday, July 16th, press release that they are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a woman in Santa Cruz, California. They identified the victim as Sara Youhas, a 73-year-old Boulder Creek resident.

CHP spokeswoman Julieta Trenado said in the accident report that they received a call about the crash around 9:45 a.m. and responded to the Bear Creek Road east of View Drive. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Youhas lying on the roadway, long deceased.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle struck the woman while she walked down an embankment next to the roadway. The spokeswoman said that Youhas had been declared missing at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14th.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was known for taking brief walks along Bear Creek and asked the public to help them find her at the time. The CHP has no information on the driver that struck the victim, and they asked witnesses to come forward and help with the investigation.

Hit-and-run and pedestrian collisions are not uncommon, and they are one of the causes of crash-related deaths. Under California law, drivers must remain at the scene of an accident, render first aid to an injured person, call 911, and wait for the relevant authorities to arrive. The person should still report the accident even though no one suffered any wound.
